Local Television of the musical variety

Today's video performances come from the small archive of local television music shows that still exist. Many of these local shows now exist only in a handful of clips that somehow managed to survive tape wiping and thoughtless station management. Today's post will highlight some of my favorite clips from this remaining record of local music television.

The first Show was on the air for several years in the 1960s on WSTV Ohio(Now WTOV), and featured a radio disc jockey as host and local high school kids as the dancers. Of the many episodes produced, the 8 clips making up about 33 minutes are all that is said to remain. Fortunately, these are on YouTube for us to enjoy.

The Lemon Pipers

Today's song is by one of my favorite whimsical 60s bands. Spanky and Our Gang, a band whose name not so subtly references the Hal Roach shorts of a similar name, was formed in 1966 and wound up two years later in 1969 after the death of member Malcolm Hale in late 1968. Their hit songs include Lazy Days, Sunday Will Never Be The Same, and today's song: I'd Like To Get To Know You.

Today's poppy song come to you from the land of The Lovin' Spoonful. Do You Believe in Magic was the Lovin' Spoonful's first in a string of group hits in 1965 and 1966, and was written by John Sebastian.

Now so you can believe, here is the Lovin' Spoonful!

They actually know each other

Today' song comes from The Association, a classic Sunshine Pop group formed in 1965 in California. Today's song and video showcase their first hit song, Along Comes Mary.

Not that kind of duke

Today's band was formed in the mid 1960s in the Chicago area and included as its lead singer the young Ted Nugent, they released several albums, but are best remembered for 1968's "The Journey To The Center Of The Mind".

So here they are The Amboy Dukes.

They're not from Springfield, or Buffalo.

Today's band Formed in April of 1966, featured many talented musicians and had a bumpy 25 month lifespan, but they made it worth all our whiles For What It's Worth. This video is from their performance on The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour.

You might think that they're British

With today's blog post I bring to you one of the lesser hits from The Beau Brummels. The Beau Brummels formed in 1964 in San Francisco, and were one of the major bands of the early post-British Invasion era, leading many to believe that they were in fact part of it though they were in fact from the United States. The Band scored two major hits, with Laugh, Laugh and Just A Little, and never again achived this success, but continued through many lane-up changes until finally parting ways in 1968.
