Local Television of the musical variety

Today's video performances come from the small archive of local television music shows that still exist. Many of these local shows now exist only in a handful of clips that somehow managed to survive tape wiping and thoughtless station management. Today's post will highlight some of my favorite clips from this remaining record of local music television.

The first Show was on the air for several years in the 1960s on WSTV Ohio(Now WTOV), and featured a radio disc jockey as host and local high school kids as the dancers. Of the many episodes produced, the 8 clips making up about 33 minutes are all that is said to remain. Fortunately, these are on YouTube for us to enjoy.

Now you're in with,

TEEN TIME!

This is an embedded playlist, and will(should) play through all 8 videos. If you prefer, here is the playlist page on YouTube: TEEN TIME

Some more information about Teen Time: 9TeenTime; Pittsburgh Radio & TV

The next clips are in COLOR, and come from an unknown television show(s).

The first clip highlights the music of this band in their attempt to get a third million seller with "1-2-3 Red Light". Here they are with a short interview at the start,

The 1910 Fruitgum Company!

Our second clip comes from the same(?) show, and features a band that appears firmly planted in the culture of their day, as they play us their only hit song, and one said to be the start of our flirtation with Bubblegum, "Green Tambourine", by

The Lemon Pipers

They're not really Hermits

Today's band needs no introduction. They took the US music scene by storm in late 1964 with hits such as "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter", and "I'm Henery the Eighth, I Am", among many others including numerious cover versions. Herman's Hermits' had a hit in 1967 with this song, "There's a Kind of Hush"

Here they are in

Herman's Hermits!

Also, as a bonus, here are the Hermits doing their version of Silhouettes:

Today's song is by one of my favorite whimsical 60s bands. Spanky and Our Gang, a band whose name not so subtly references the Hal Roach shorts of a similar name, was formed in 1966 and wound up two years later in 1969 after the death of member Malcolm Hale in late 1968. Their hit songs include Lazy Days, Sunday Will Never Be The Same, and today's song: I'd Like To Get To Know You.

So without further ado, I present to you, Spanky and Our Gang:

Not the Wright Brothers

Hello again, after a 3 month hiatus I'm back again, but this time I'm only going to post once every week (or that's the plan, it may be more).

but anyway...

Today's band had a successful single top 5 hit, sold over a million copies of their self-titled album debut, made a promotional video, and was never heard from again.

So without further ado I present for your listening pleasure, Smile a Little Smile For Me, by The Flying Machine.

She's much prettier than Jeremy

Todays song is brought to you by virtue of the temporary loss of a member. in 1965 Jeremy was in a play, so Chad, not wanting to preform alone, enlisted the help of his wife Jill, and magic happened with the song "The Cruel War". This performance is from Hullabaloo, in COLOR.
(wikipedia Chad and Jeremy)

Here they are, Chad and Jill!

they're not for in the house

Today's band formed in 1963, and among their string of hits, was a string of even more memorable musicians, including Eric Clapton, Jeff_Beck, and Jimmy Page. I'm of course speaking of the fabulous The Yardbirds, presented here for your listening pleasure.

And here they are in 1966 (featuring Jimmy Page!) with Shapes of Things!

Also, here is a cool(er) video of this song, but it cannot be embedded.

Also, I found this video of Jimmy from 1957 to be very neat, so I'm including it here for your pleasure as well.

They're not from Springfield, or Buffalo.

Today's band Formed in April of 1966, featured many talented musicians and had a bumpy 25 month lifespan, but they made it worth all our whiles For What It's Worth. This video is from their performance on The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour.

So without further ado, here is the Buffalo Springwhich with For What It's Worth!

Vaudeville meets Hollywood

...Palace that is.

Today's song and video feature the famed but easily forgotten New Vaudeville band which formed in 1966, and had a single big hit with the song Winchester Cathedral. The video also includes at the start the band's next biggest hit, "Peek-a-boo" with some hillarious speech bubbles throughout.

Enjoy

Not just a Wild Thing

Today's selection is a woderful song from the Troggs. The Troggs formed in 1964, and had several hits including Wild Thing (Promotional Video), With a Girl Like You (Promotional Video), and Love Is All Around, the song and promotional video of the day (this was a very difficult choice, because all three of these songs are amazing).

You might think that they're British

With today's blog post I bring to you one of the lesser hits from The Beau Brummels. The Beau Brummels formed in 1964 in San Francisco, and were one of the major bands of the early post-British Invasion era, leading many to believe that they were in fact part of it though they were in fact from the United States. The Band scored two major hits, with Laugh, Laugh and Just A Little, and never again achived this success, but continued through many lane-up changes until finally parting ways in 1968.

For your viewing pleasure I present to you, Don't Talk To Strangers from their appearance on Hullabaloo September 27, 1965:

If anyone has a song that they think deserves to be an upcomming song on the blog, let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading! :-)

The Left Banke is higher than the right

Today's band formed at the height of 60s rock in 1965, and made a niche for themselves in the Baroque Pop scene. Their first album Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina featured the bands only two major hits. The first of these two songs is today's video, the eerie "Walk Away Renée" released in 1966.

...and here they are, THE LEFT BANKE!!!!

For anyone interested in it, here is their other hit, Pretty Ballerina:

5-4-3-2-1

A classic by the band that is probably best remembered for their hit song Do wah diddy, I present to you 5-4-3-2-1 by Manfred Mann!! This clip appears to be from Shindig!, but I"m not really sure.

Manfred Mann was a British beat band in the early and mid 60s named after their keyboardist. They created this song(which rose to #5 in the U.K.) as a new theme song for ITV's Ready, Steady, GO! in 1964.

Manfred Mann's 5-4-3-2-1 as the opening for Ready Steady GO!

The Music Television of the '60s

Here are the logos from these classic TV shows, as well as links to more information about each.

Hullabaloo!

Shindig!

Shivaree!

Where The Action Is!

The first post

Here it is folks, the first post to cristen the "Phillip's Songs" Blog. Each week(assuming that I remember) I will post one of my favorite music-related videos on this Blog. This will mostly mean old TV appearences of 60s groups(but others also like Tears For Fears) from old TV Shows such as Hullabaloo, Shindig, Shivaree, Where The Action Is, The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour, Top Of The Pops, Beat Club, and other clips from Local (and syndicated) American TV shows. Also these post will (ideally) include a short bio of the artist, a story related to the song, or at the very least a link to Wikipedia(this could include the former(s), but will include the later).

So without further ado, here is the first video to cristen the channel(after much internal debate):

It's the Hollies on SHINDIG! in 1965 playing "I'm Alive"
along with their most recogniseable song(at least at the time) "Just One Look", a cover of a song by Doris Troy.

Also, the Shindig! Dancers(Shindancers?) do some very 60s dancing throughout.

Also, I reserve the right to post much more often than once a week if I feel like I must share a new video that I've found.
